Scouring through a dusty jewelry box Pam found nostalgic pieces of her mother. Gold necklaces and worn out rings, her big hats sat on the top of her dresser. At any moment she expected Daisy to prance out of the closet and softly say “Well hello there”.

Daisy had died a month ago and yet Pam was finally going through her mother’s possessions. Was she her mother? She didn’t know as Daisy was closer to a stranger, than a mother. She was closer to her jewelry than they ever were. As she took out a huge pearl a long gold chain followed after, and with it a crumpled piece of paper was entangled in the center.

Today I told Jay something I did not realize before. I love them both, each in their own ways.

However, what we had as children can never be recreated and therefore will never be possible. While this fleeting time was an exciting moment, it will be the last I ever see him again.

Pam stared in confusion as she looked over the passage again. Jay? Of the many visitors over the years who had her mother been so enchanted with? She could not believe such a person exist.

She watched over the years as her and Tom grew distant, putting on a facade in public, never allowed to show the cracks underneath. She just didn’t realize some of that was real. Pam could never understand her mother. A warm and charming woman, yet so empty much like the other people at all their parties. She closed the box shut and decided she would finish another day. As she left, she couldn’t help but feel a slight jealously linger in the back of her mind.

  1. Nice blog! The plot was very interesting as well as the rhetorical devices you used. Using nostalgia as Pam going through her mother’s jewelry box to the emotional depth of Pam’s jealousy and confusion really tells how discovering someone’s past really shows who that person is.

  2. Ooo I like that you wrote from Pam’s pov, it’s very interesting to see her views of Daisy since that’s not revealed. However it’s hinted in the novel that Daisy and Tom doesn’t seem like great parents as they’re superficial and careless people who only really care about money and status as to maintaining family relationships. Great story!

  3. I really liked how you showed Pam discovering her mother’s past it added a really nostalgic feeling. The way you describe the jewelry and the letter makes the scene really vivid, and I like how it shows Pam realizing her mother was more complicated than she thought. The ending, with that lingering jealousy was subtle but really contributed overall.

  4. Great blog, I like how the discovery of the crumpled note instantly fractured Pam's distant, established image of her mother, injecting a sharp, immediate mystery into her grief.

  5. Wow I love this. I liked how you wrote in Pam's perspective and her emotions as she learns about Gatsby and her mother's relationship. This is a new perspective for me and I love it!
