Drama Queen

In our family there is one drama queen and four girls. They’re the youngest of their family. And no, it’s not my sister. And it’s not my mom either. So take a guess, who could it be?

“When I imagine your dad, I see him in a pink tutu and a glittery wand”. -Nabiha Jahan

So my dad; he’s the biggest and basically the most human out of our family. He expresses himself like crazy. I believe it’s from being the youngest of five. And therefore between my sisters and I, he receives little reciprocation. His emotions range from Angry Bird to Peppa Pig. He’s big into fashion and what he wears. We were once dragged across the mall for five hours, and because of him I developed a hatred for shopping. He takes forever to get ready, taking longer than four women combined.

Of course, we just discussed gender stereotypes so I’m not hating, just noticing how my family functions. Of his traits the one that annoys me the most is his addiction to trends. He is yet another victim of consumerism and materialism. Just recently he went to Costco by himself and bought Dubai chocolate thinking it was the viral Dubai Chewy Cookie. Born and raised in Korea, like many, I feel he has the materialistic nature embedded into him, due to the social culture there. They do everything to fit in, whether it be buying designer clothes or going to the hottest new restaurants. It partly also has to do with curiosity. He wants to see what all the commotion is about and stay in the loop. However, all these trends end and start so quickly I don’t know how anyone can keep up. You’re left with a pile of products that you’re not sure you even wanted, find out is overhyped, or something from last season.

You can’t live freely anymore if you’re so focused on following what other people do. We need to relax and stop buying things just for show. Somebody please tell Mr. Drama Queen to stop buying useless stuff.

  1. This is hilarious Katherine park. When I think of Korean dads they are usually very serious and emotionless and scary. I thought your dad was like that too when I was in your car, but this post revealed the exact opposite. I actually cannot imagine him dragging you guys to shopping and taking forever to get ready. this definitely reshaped my stereotypes and I totally agree with Nabiha lmao

  2. I love they way you described everything! The way you said "angry bird to Peppa Pig" was so funny. I also kind of relate to this because by dad is so susceptible to ads or display items for so many different kinds of gadgets to solve problems we don't even have. Or even some strange foods or snacks, nobody going to actually eat. Like you said it is curiosity, for my dad he is just so curious on how it can help, it overrides all the logic on why we need it. So, I often expect my dad to show up with an odd find after a solo trip to store, followed by mom getting concerned on where we going to fit this next to all the other things my dad has brought home. I love the last sentence it just so perfect and direct. I loved reading this, It was great to know this is just not only my dad who does this!

  3. This cracked me up lol. My quote clearly made the blog 😛. But in all seriousness, I love how you made to sure to make it clear that you were not stereotyping your dad and was just explains your family dynamics. My dad is much the same in the way he’s a bigger drama queen than I am, it’s tiring at times but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

  4. This is quite amazing and funny. I relate a lot to your dad because I love shopping, getting ready and Dubai chocolate ;) I can also relate because I definitely am apart of this whole consumerism thing and I also feel the need to stop that.

  5. I like how you flipped gender stereotypes by showing how your dad is actually the one most into fashion and trends in your house. Your point about how exhausting it is to keep up with viral products like the Dubai chocolate really highlights how annoying consumerism can be.
